Oakland was 4-3 last year and in the playoff hunt but finished the year on a 3-6 run. Offseason additions have them believing they are a legitimate playoff threat in 2016.

New Orleans started the 2015 season 1-4 and never made a playoff push as their defense ranked 31st in yards allowed and led the league with 45 TD passes surrendered.

The Raiders want to be more balanced offensively this year but look for QB Derek Carr to attack this suspect secondary early and often. WRs Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree should have a big edge against several young, untested CBs in this matchup. The Saints pass rush appears to be lacking while Oakland has one of the best o-lines in the league. RB Latavius Murray will lead the ground attack again this year but has a pair of diminutive (5’8” each) rookie RBs to spell him, Jalen Richard and DeAndre Washington. Both of them are adept receivers and will be a tough matchup for the Saints’ LBs out of the backfield.

New Orleans QB Drew Brees just signed a new contract and should approach 5,000 yards passing again this year. WR Brandin Cooks is the new No.1 and WR Willie Snead is a capable No.2. Brees has had success with TEs Jimmy Graham and Ben Watson in the past few seasons and now will try to make TE Cody Fleener a star. Oakland has struggled for years defending TEs and look for Fleener to be a popular target. The Raiders have added some defensive talent in the offseason but they aren’t yet a finished product. RB Mark Ingram is the lead back and will get his chances against a run defense that yielded 4.1 ypc in 2015.

Both of these teams can score and while Oakland’s defense is ascending, the offenses should dominate this contest. The Saints didn’t make nearly enough adjustments to their squad and will be transitioning back to a 4-3 defense. It will take time for all the pieces to jell and I expect the Raiders to move the ball at will against this group. Look for a high-scoring affair at the Superdome in this one.
