The Cincinnati Bengals will travel to East Rutherford to square off with the New York Jets in Week One of the 2016-17 NFL season. Kick-off is set for 1:00 PM ET and set to air on CBS. The Bengals come in off an AFC North Champion effort of 12-4, though the Bengals made a quick exit from the playoffs as they usually do. For the New York Jets, they were knocking on the door of the postseason at 10-6 but a road loss at Buffalo separated them from a wild card berth.

The Jets come back with perhaps an ever more potent offense with the off-season acquisition of workhorse running back Matt Forte. For those who need a reminder of what Matt Forte can do, simply refer to his accolades when he was the go-to-guy in Mike Martz’s offense just a few years ago. “The Strong Man” had more touches than any back in the NFL and was able to produce stellar numbers while accruing the touches, making the most of production opportunities in the role. Behind a rebuilt and deep offensive line, Forte has that chance again with Gang Green against a very inconsistent Cincinnati defense.

Cincinnati at this price is tempting to many but it is simply the difference in records that are the hard sell here. Cincinnati is typically mediocre on the road, relying on an inconsistent offense led by a boom or bust quarterback in Andy Dalton. Sure, the Bengals may have A.J. Green but the Jets have Darelle Revis, need us say any more. The Bengals also do not fare well on the road historically. Cincinnati has the appeal because they often start off strong. In the previous year the Bengals got off to a dashing sprint out of the gate but they were nonetheless eliminated from the NFL Playoffs in the First Round when they were defeated by division rival Pittsburgh. Same old Bengals.

The Jets are notoriously tough when at home, plus they also have a defensive unit that can cause calamity for virtually any opposition. The Jets in East Rutherford are far more ferocious as they play every team tough, to get them with points here is a true value play especially considering the fact line movements suggest that much of the public rather spot points with a road favorite. Dicey play in Week One, the Jets offer more upside.
