Both teams enter off 10-win seasons in 2016 but the narratives behind each could not more contrasting. For Troy, the Trojans were overachievers despite falling apart down the back stretch in what seemed to be an all-but secure Sun Belt Championship bid for the upstart outfit. The Trojans took it to the Clemson Tigers in Death Valley, the team that would continue onto capture the national championship of the 2016-17 season marking their sole defeat in an 8-1 start. The Trojans would hit a nasty bump when they were walloped by Arkansas State 35-3 in a November clash that ultimately decided Troy’s fate for the Sun Belt crown. After the loss, the Trojans would go 1-1 to cap off their season but would delight in finishing with a bowl victory to complete their campaign.

For Boise State, the Broncos seemed to be on their way to a potential Group of Five New Year’s Six Game and perhaps may be even a bit more given their historical record. However, the Broncos would be shocked in Laramie, Wyoming by one of 2016’s surprise teams the Wyoming Cowboys after winning their first seven contests from the start. Boise would lose again to Air Force to miss the Mountain West Championship Game and get rolled in the Cactus Bowl by Baylor in their season nightcap.
