San Jose State Spartans at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Week 11 Pick
Betting Odds

The San Jose State Spartans (4-5) will head to the Aloha State to face off with the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (5-4) in a Mountain West Conference clash set to take place on Saturday, November 9th, 2019. Kick-off time is set for 11:00 PM ET, and the match will be broadcasted on CBS Sports Network. Last year, overtime was required when these two sides met as the Warriors edged out the Spartans 44-41 in San Jose, enabling SJSU to cover as a nine-point underdog. The Spartans are 3-1 ATS in the previous four matches between both parties.

Last week was a week that we would like to forget as we found ourselves on the receiving end of some bad beats in our selections. Our UL Monroe +105 play was a loss despite the Warhawks leading by as much 14 at one point in the game. Texas State was, unfortunately, unable to come in under the +22.5 number despite the Bobcats having an opportunity to score late by virtue of the backdoor in what was a 31-3 final. For those that jumped aboard our SMU play against the spread, it was a matter of when you took Ponies to determine the result. The Mustangs peaked at +6.5, which would have been a win and closed at +6, which produced a push in a 54-46 loss at Memphis. Unfortunately, we took the Mustangs outright on the Money Line at +130 to reduce the juice, when they were just three-point underdogs at the open. This week we will dig deep and mine for the value, eager to respond to last week’s results.

San Jose State Spartans at Hawaii Rainbow Warriors Overview

San Jose State Spartans

The Spartans come into this contest on the heels of a hard-fought loss when it hosted the Boise State Broncos on Saturday. Closing as a 16.5-point underdog, the Spartans gave the Broncos a fight in what ultimately was a 52-42 defeat that left San Jose State looking stronger despite losing. The Spartans have been on fire against the spread going 5-1-1 in their last seven contests. Though I am one for fading trends of this nature given how this can position a team to be overvalued. San Jose State is different. These are guys that are normally known as one of the MWC's cupcakes, and the market simply has not caught up as to how improved this team truly is.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

The Rainbow Warriors enter into this contest off a 41-38 loss sustained on their own turf against the visiting Fresno State Bulldogs. Hawaii closed as a two-point favorite and as a result, has fallen to 1-3 ATS in their previous four matches.

Reasons To Back San Jose State Spartans

San Jose State will be highly motivated to atone for what happened last year when these two sides last met. In addition to the vindication that SJSU seeks, the Spartans have shown that they can play up to premium levels of competition. In addition to the aforementioned fistfight it engaged with Boise State, the Spartans preceded this result with a 34-29 upset of Army in West Point on October 26th despite closing as a 10-point underdog. San Jose State pulled a similar rabbit out of their hat earlier this year in an upset of the Arkansas Razorbacks in Fayetteville when SJSU closed as a 20-point underdog. This team is hungry to get to a bowl and looking to make a name for itself while doing so.

Reasons To Avoid Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

In many regards, Hawaii and San Jose State's offensive schemes are mirror images. Both love to throw the football. The Spartans' offense is seventh in the FBS in passing yards per game (325.1 ypg) while the Rainbow Warriors are third in America in the same department (353.6 passing yards per outing). The difference is the defenses. San Jose State’s defense is far better equipped as it gives up just 207.1 yards through the air (43rd in the FBS) to Hawaii’s 74th-ranked passing defense (231.7 passing yards against per contest). The difference in passing defenses can be instrumental, given how this game is forecasted to be settled by a possession. The problem is that the difference is working against the hosts.

San Jose State at Hawaii Prediction 11/09/19
This game has all the makings of a shootout written all over it, and in such an event, the wise and prudent move is to take the points. Sure, I respect Hawaii and their home-field advantage, but the Spartans quite frankly could give a hoot. After all, San Jose State has challenged tougher opponents this year, and they have also succeeded in hostile environs. This team will be coming motivated, not just looking to cover but to win outright. Be that as it may, I'll take the converted touchdown which gives us tremendous equity in what could be an outright upset.
