North Carolina at Virginia Tech Game Overview

The losses continue to pile up for the Tar Heels as part of a very disappointing 1-6 straight-up record through their first seven games. They are a costly 1-5-1 against the spread and the total has stayed UNDER in their last four games. North Carolina split its first two games on the road this season both SU and ATS with the total evenly split as well. It is coming off a 20-14 loss to Virginia at home as a three-point underdog.

North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora turned to Brandon Harris last week against the Cavaliers in an effort to spark an offense that is only averaging 23.7 points per game. The results were pretty much the same with Harris only connecting on seven of his 18 passing attempts for 46 yards. He was also picked off three times. Chazz Surratt has taken most of the snaps this season and he has thrown for 1,167 yards and six touchdowns. The one bright spot for the Tar Heels in last week’s loss was a much better effort from a defense that is allowing 31.1 PPG.

Virginia Tech appears to be headed to a showdown against No. 8 Miami for this year’s ACC Coastal Division title. It is coming off a bye following a close call against Boston College on Oct. 7 in a 23-10 win as a 16-point road favorite. The Hokies are 5-1 SU, but they fall to an even 3-3 ATS. The total has now stayed UNDER in their last three games and on the year it has stayed UNDER or ended as a PUSH in five of their six games.

With Josh Jackson throwing the ball and Travon McMillian running it, the Hokies have been able to average 33.3 PPG. Jackson has completed 65.6 percent of his 192 passing attempts for 1,700 yards and 13 touchdowns against four interceptions. McMillian has carried the ball 55 times for 279 yards and two scores as the team’s leading rusher. The main strength of this team still lies in a defense that is holding opposing teams to 13.7 PPG.

North Carolina at Virginia Tech Week 8 ATS Prediction

This is an obvious mismatch on paper that should turn into a mismatch on the field, but laying three touchdowns in what has been a pretty decent rivalry over the years carries quite a bit of risk. The Tar Heels are playing for pride with their bowl chances already shot and I actually think they can take advantage of the Hokies possibly looking past this game to cover with the 21 points.
