Padres-Dodgers MLB Betting Preview

San Diego took the first two games of this series, winning 3-2 Thursday night and 6-1 Friday. Los Angeles then won Saturday's game 5-4.

The Dodgers trailed early Saturday 2-0 and 3-2 into the bottom of the sixth inning, then scored three runs to take the lead for good. The Padres later got the tying run to third base with two outs in the ninth but came up empty.

San Diego cashed in as a +145 underdog Thursday against Walker Buehler and as a +130 dog Friday against Clay Kershaw. LA then won as a +140 favorite Saturday with newcomer Trevor Bauer.

Also, Thursday's game played under a total of 7.5 runs, while Friday's and Saturday's games played over totals of 6.5 and seven.

Even with their two wins in this series, the Padres are only 3-6 over their last nine games.

The Dodgers, meanwhile, are 2-4 over their last six games.

At 15-6 overall, Los Angeles leads the NL West by two games over second-place San Francisco, with 12-11 San Diego four games back.

This season series is tied at three games apiece.

Last year the Dodgers took the season series from the Padres six games to four, then swept San Diego in three games in a National League playoff series, on their way toward that World Series title.

Sunday's Pitching Match-Up

May is 1/3 on quality starts this season. Monday, he gave up three runs on four hits, including two home runs, through five innings of a 4-3 LA loss at Seattle. And just before that, he gave up two runs through 4 1/3 frames of a 4-2 Dodgers win over Colorado. So on the season, May has allowed five earned runs on 13 hits and four walks through 15 1/3 innings.

Los Angeles is 2-1 with May this season.

Over three starts against San Diego last season, May allowed four runs and eight hits through 13 innings. The Dodgers won two of those three games.

Musgrove is three-for-four on quality starts this season. Monday, he held Milwaukee to two runs and four hits through seven innings, with 13 strikeouts, although the Padres lost that game 3-1. And over his three starts previous to that, including that no-hitter against Texas, Musgrove allowed just one run and seven hits through 19 innings. So on the season, the kid from El Cajon has allowed just three runs and 11 hits through 26 innings, with three walks and 37 whiffs.

And yet the Padres are only 2-2 with Musgrove this year.

Over three career starts against Los Angeles, while with Pittsburgh, Musgrove allowed 10 ER and 22 hits through 16 2/3 innings. The Pirates lost all three of those games.

The Dodgers, who are operating without the injured Cody Bellinger, are batting .266/.365/.468 against right-handed pitching this season. Los Angeles has also been held to three runs or less six times over its last seven games.

San Diego at Los Angelos Prediction 4/25/21
We're giving Musgrove the edge in the pitching match-up, and while Los Angeles might own an edge with the sticks, San Diego holds a short edge in the bullpen comparison. Plus, the Padres want this one bad after losing a series to the Dodgers last weekend. So we like San Diego here, getting a short underdog price for our free MLB pick for Sunday.
