Georgia and Alabama combined to win eight of the last nine SEC championships, and one of them will win it again Saturday afternoon in Atlanta. These teams are also battling for spots in the upcoming College Football Playoff. If the Bulldogs win Saturday, they’re in. But if Alabama wins, there is a possibility the SEC will miss out on the CFP. And wouldn’t that be nuts?

SEC Championship Betting Odds

The Championship Week college football betting market opened Georgia as a 4.5-point favorite for Saturday, with an over/under of right around 56. Early betting action bumped the Bulldogs two points to -6.5 and dipped that total to 54.5. According to Sagarin’s ratings, this game - unless we’re reading it wrong - should be a pick ‘em. And even if we gave Georgia Sagarin’s home-field advantage, that would only come to 2.5 points.

SEC Championship Betting Preview

Georgia

Georgia reached this SEC championship game by going 8-0 in conference play, finishing with a 38-10 triumph at Tennessee two weeks ago. The Bulldogs then stepped out of SEC play last week and held off rival Georgia Tech 31-23. Georgia, favored by 24 points, trailed the Yellowjackets early 10-7. The Bulldogs later led 31-13 but couldn’t pull away and came up short ATS. UGA produced 437 yards of offense last week, including 262 on the ground, despite missing several starters on that side of the ball. Hopefully, those guys are better for Saturday. Two weeks ago the Bulldogs covered -8 easily at Tennessee. Georgia beat Ole Miss 52-17 three weeks ago and covered at -11. At 12-0 overall, the two-time defending national champion Bulldogs are a win away from another trip to the CFP.

Alabama

Meanwhile, Alabama reached this SEC title tilt by also going 8-0 in conference play, finishing with that crazy 27-24 Iron Bowl victory at Auburn last Saturday. The Crimson Tide, two-touchdown favorites, trailed the Tigers 24-20 late but received a minor miracle on a 4th-and-31 touchdown in the last minute to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Alabama out-gained Auburn 451-337 and gave up 244 yards on the ground but won the turnover battle 3-0. Back in September, the Tide took their only loss of the season, 34-24, at home to Texas. Since then, Alabama has gone 10-0 SU and 7-3 ATS. At 11-1 overall, the Crimson Tide sit at No. 8 in this week’s CFP standings. There’s some traffic between them and No. 4, but we believe if ‘Bama beats Georgia on Saturday, they would deserve an invitation.

Common Opponents

These two teams played four common opponents this season: Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. The Bulldogs played those foes to 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS, and +248 yards per game, and the Tide to 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS, and +79 YPG. Georgia-Alabama Recent History The Tide beat the ‘Dawgs seven times in a row from 2006-21, including three times in SEC championship games and once in a national championship bout. But most recently, in the FBS title game two seasons ago, Georgia beat Alabama 33-18.

College Football Betting Trends

Georgia is 45-1 SU, 25-21 ATS over its last 46 games. The underdog is 7-3 ATS over the last ten meetings between these teams.

Totals Report

  • The totals are split 6-6-1 in Bulldogs games this season, which are averaging 55 total points.
  • The Overs are 9-2-1 in Tide games, which are averaging 54 points.
  • And what’s the total on this game?

Bulldogs at Crimson Tide Free Pick ATS

Georgia owns statistical advantages on both sides of the ball, especially offensively. The Bulldogs have also performed better vs. common opponents. Also, Alabama just extended itself to the very end last week against Auburn, an effort that had to be draining both physically and emotionally. Which, in our mind, makes the Tide decent candidates for a letdown this week. We like Georgia to take this SEC championship game on Saturday, minus the points.
