The Carolina Panthers take on the Arizona Cardinals in Glendale on Sunday. The Cardinals are coming off a divisional win over the 49ers, 31-17, where they overcame personnel adversity to go to 8-1, now in first place in the NFC West. They now return home to take on a Panthers team coming off an ugly 24-6 loss at home to the Patriots. Can the Cardinals keep it rolling in what seems like a manageable spot or will the Panthers compete with an Arizona squad that perhaps isn't at peak-form?

Hard to Back the Panthers

It's one thing to assess a team's individual parts, but when the overall product is broken, it might not matter. We don't want to overstate the case, but the ensuing weeks since a 3-0 start shows a team in crisis. The more-frequent duds from Sam Darnold have undermined an offense with considerable weaponry. Last week, with Christian McCaffrey back in tow, they fired up a measly 6-spot, letting down anyone who went anywhere near them on any kind of bet. And it has becoming fatiguing getting burned by this bunch, from the inconsistent defensive performances, a dysfunctional offense, the spiraling returns on DJ Moore and Robby Anderson, etc. How can you have a 1000-yard receiver in Anderson and end up making it so he has the production of the fifth choice on a crappy Pop Warner team?

With some vague defensive resolve remaining and the growing form of McCaffrey, however, maybe some hope can be justified. For all their issues and how they've become increasingly futile on offense and exploitable on defense, only two teams in the Vikings and Cowboys have been able to surpass 25 points against this bunch. Granted, the Cardinals would seem to fall into the category of the teams that laid it on thick against Carolina, but that type of scrappiness can especially come in handy when big-sized spreads like this are on the table.

Compromised Cardinals?

It didn't really show last week against a Niners team in peril, but the personnel setbacks could start to register for the Cardinals moving forward. Last week saw Kyler Murray out of action with a sprained ankle. Signs appear to point to a return this week, but a full-capacity Murray isn't a guarantee. With variety being a part of their effectiveness on this side of the ball, some pieces are beginning to fall, including RB Chase Edmonds, DeAndre Hopkins (questionable), and AJ Green (probable). With the rise of RB James Conner in this offense along with a hearty receiving corps, they are likely to remain in good shape against the lower-half teams from this conference, but maybe anticipating a close-to-vintage Cardinals showing is asking too much on this particular week.

The PJ Walker Factor

Even if not for a shoulder injury to Sam Darnold, you'd figure we'd see PJ Walker in there for the Panthers, as he will get the nod this week at quarterback. It can't be much worse than what we've been seeing lately. And maybe signing old Panther Cam Newton will pay off. With McCaffrey ready to perhaps resume a full workload, they could lean on him more. Coach Matt Rhule was Walker's college coach at Temple and he won his only NFL start last season after rebuilding his name in the XFL. Against what the Cardinals can bring to the table on defense, including a robust pass-rush, this will be a tough trial-by-fire for the 5'11” 26-year old second-time starter. It's not the most-tantalizing QB change in the world, but maybe just some newness in the face of failure will hit the spot.

Panthers at Cardinals Week 10 Prediction ATS

Anyone who has seen Carolina in recent weeks won't find this an easy move to make. Their offense has been awful, they can't get solid QB play, and there isn't a lot of overall energy on that side of the ball. But between Murray being gimpy and some other personnel issues on Arizona and the fact that the Carolina defense is seldom truly run over, it makes this spread seem a little daunting to an Arizona team that is dealing with some things. With some production from a healthier McCaffrey, I see the Panthers vaguely hanging in there, at least to the point where they cover the spread. I'll take the Panthers in this one with the points.
