Two teams in search of a much-needed win will duke it out this Monday night in an NFC tilt between the 1-5 New York Giants and the 2-4 Atlanta Falcons. Kickoff at Mercedes-Benz Stadium is set for 8:15 p.m. (ET) on ESPN.

New York at Atlanta Game Overview

A New York win its last time out against Philadelphia would have put it right in the thick of the jumbled NFC East standings, but it was not meant to be in a 34-13 loss at home as a 1.5-point underdog. The Giants are now 1-5 straight-up with a 2-4 record against the spread. They have gone 1-2 SU on the road with a 2-1 record ATS. The total has gone OVER in three of their last four games overall.

The heat has come down hard on veteran quarterback Eli Manning in the wake of New York’s latest loss. He painted himself as the easy scapegoat with zero touchdown passes, one interception and four sacks for minus 27 yards, but the real blame starts up front with the offensive line. The lone bright spot in that game was rookie Saquon Barkley’s 130 yards rushing and one touchdown on just 13 carries.

Atlanta started its season with a tough 18-12 road loss to the Eagles in a game that closed as a PICK. It was able to snap a three-game skid (SU and ATS) last Sunday with a 34-29 victory at home against Tampa Bay as a three-point favorite. When you add in everything in between those two games, you get a 2-4 start both SU and ATS. The total went OVER 57.5 points against the Buccaneers, and it has gone OVER in the Falcons' last five games.

Matt Ryan has received his fair share of blame for his team’s slow start, but he lit things up last Sunday with 354 yards passing and three touchdown throws while connecting on 31 of his 41 passing attempts. The Falcons remain one dimensional with a rushing offense that is ranked 29th in the NFL in yards per game (86.0). Add in a defense that is allowing an average of 32 points per game, and it is easy to see why this team has gotten off to a slower than expected start.

New York at Atlanta Prediction 10/22/2018
New York sunk as about as low as possible in last Thursday’s loss to Philadelphia which could mean it has nowhere to go but up. Atlanta has lost a few tough games this season, but it has also shot itself in the foot to lose twice as many games as it has won. I would still give the overall edge to the Falcons playing this game at home. However, that edge is thinner than the generous 5.5-point spread.
Each team has given up quite a few points on defense, but the inflated total line has scared me away from the OVER as a solid play given the Giants’ play on offense. I am betting that New York does not play as bad as most people think, especially against a team it could actually beat. I will take the Giants and the points to cover on Monday night.
