Pittsburgh at North Carolina Game Overview

The Panthers are coming off a tough 45-38 loss to Oklahoma State this past Saturday as 2.5-point road underdogs after getting past Villanova and Penn State in their first two games. Pittsburgh has failed to cover against the spread in all three games and the total has gone OVER in its last two. Going back to last season, it is 0-5 ATS in its last five games and the total has gone OVER four of its last six outings.

Last week against the Cowboys, quarterback Nathan Peterman ended the day with 237 yards passing and one touchdown while completing less than half of his 29 attempts, but the Panthers were able to rack up 290 yards on the ground. James Conner and Quadree Henderson led the way with 206 yards and three scores on 31 carries. The problem was a Pitt defense that gave up 540 yards through the air. The Panthers have now allowed a total of 84 points in their last two games.

North Carolina started the season in the AP’s 25, but the stay did not last long with a 33-24 loss to Georgia in Week 1 as a 3.5-point underdog. The Tar Heels bounced back with wins against Illinois on the road and James Madison at home both straight-up and ATS in which they scored a combined 104 points. The total went OVER 59.5 against the Fighting Illini and there was no posted total line in last week’s win. The total has now gone OVER in four of their last five home games.

The big story for North Carolina’s offense this season has been the play of quarterback Mitch Trubisky. He has completed 73.6 percent of his 91 attempts for 853 yards and five touchdowns against zero interceptions. Ryan Switzer has been his favorite target with 17 receptions for 221 yards and a score while Elijah Hood has been the top back in the running game with 266 yards and four touchdowns on 43 carries. Overall, the Tar Heels are tied for 21st in the nation in scoring with 42.7 points per game.

Pittsburgh at North Carolina Prediction
Both of these teams have shown the early ability to put points on the board and I see that once again being the case in Saturday’s matchup. Pitt should be able to keep things close well into the second half, but its suspect defense will be hard-pressed to keep the Tar Heels in check for all four quarters.
North Carolina has gotten the best of things since the Panthers joined the ACC and I like its chances to keep this winning streak alive with another SU win this Saturday at home. When it comes to betting this game, I believe the “best bet” pick is still with the OVER 67.5 on the total line.
