Oregon State Beavers

The Beavers come into this contest on the heels of a beat-down sustained at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys when the two met last Friday in Corvallis. Closing as a 13.5-point underdog, the Beavers came up just short of producing a cover when they fell 52-36 to the Pokes.

Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

The Rainbow Warriors enter into this contest off a Week Zero win against the Arizona Wildcats when they staged a 45-38 upset as a 10.5-point home underdog. The standout contributor for the effort was Warriors Wide Receiver Cedric Byrd who found the end zone four teams and proliferated 224 reception yards.

Reasons To Back Oregon State Beavers

Oregon State will come into this contest with an "everything to gain and nothing to lose" mentality. After all, they went just 2-10 in the 2018-19 campaign, and they got their doors blown off in their season opener against Oklahoma State. Teams like this are especially dangerous when they are up against a team who has expectations. For example, many like Hawaii as a dark horse to win the Mountain West while Oregon State would be happy to win six games. This gives Oregon State a distinctive edge as they will come into this game looser while Hawaii will feel under the gun to produce another win against a Pac-12 opponent. The fact remains that the Beavers can also have some optimism. The last time we saw Oregon State score 36 or more points against a Power Five opponent was in October of 2018 against Colorado when they hung 41 on the Cougars. The Beavers scored 36 or more against a Power Five opponent just twice in the 2018-19 season. Yet, Oregon State managed to achieve this in the first game of the 2019-20 season, so there is certainly a silver lining here for the Beavers as they go up against a Hawaii defense that ranks 119th in the FBS in total defense.

Reasons To Avoid Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

What it looks like we have shaping up here is a good old-fashioned zig-zag. In their home opener against Arizona, the Rainbow Warriors were taking back 10.5 points at the closing bell. As we know, Hawaii would go onto win outright staging their second consecutive opening-game upset dating back to 2018 when they shocked Colorado State on the road as a 17-point underdog. Now in 2018, the Warriors followed up in Week Two hosting the Navy Midshipmen where they pulled yet another upset as a 13.5-point underdog. This time around, the market has sharpened up and moved the Warriors to nearly a touchdown favorite. This, in essence, is a 16.5-point swing. In spite of this, the public has hopped all over Hawaii as 78% of the consensus are on the Warriors, and the line has already moved upward by a point. Against Arizona, a lot of the public fancied the Wildcats over the Rainbow Warriors, and much to their chagrin Desert Swarm came up short. Now the reverse seems to be the case, and that creates an opportunity for us to take advantage.

Oregon State at Hawaii Prediction 09/07/2019
Against Arizona, the Rainbow Warriors committed six turnovers, and they gave up 539 yards of total offense. With respect to this narrative, Arizona was literally a yard away from sending the game to overtime. Had the contest gone to extra time who is to say that Hawaii gets the job done and pulls off the victory? Oregon State now enters into this contest playing the role that Hawaii did in its previous effort. Given the offensive connotation that will undoubtedly surround this game, I much rather have points to work with as opposed to spotting them. Furthermore, should Hawaii play sloppy as it did against Arizona, I don't like their prospects of pulling another rabbit out from under their hat. I am going to go ahead and put the Rainbow Warriors on upset alert.
