North Carolina at Georgia Game Overview

The expectation level for football this season in Chapel Hill has been set pretty high with the Tar Heels ranked in the AP’s preseason Top 25. They went 11-3 straight-up last season including a wild 45-37 loss to Clemson in the ACC title game as 6.5-point underdogs. North Carolina went 8-6 against the spread in 2015 after failing to cover in three of its last four games.

The Tar Heels will be looking to build on last year’s success with a big win right out of the gate against a SEC power. Tailback Elijah Hood is back to lead a rushing attack that averaged 222.9 yards a game in 2015 and offense as a whole was ranked 11th in the nation in scoring with an average of 40.9 points a game. With a good chunk of talent returning on the other side of the ball, the Tar Heels’ defense under the guidance of Gene Chizik in his second season as defensive coordinator should improve.

The Bulldogs are also looking for bigger and better things in 2016 following an impressive five-game SU winning streak to close things out last season while going 4-1 ATS. They ended the year 10-3 SU with a 6-7 record ATS. The total stayed UNDER in their last seven games and it stayed UNDER in 10 of 13 games overall.

The good news for Georgia fans is that Heisman hopeful running back Nick Chubb has been upgraded to probable for Saturday’s game after dealing with a devastating knee injury in early October of last season. The Bulldogs are another team that has built their offense around the running game and even with Chubb out of the lineup they averaged 194.3 rushing yards a game in 2015. Georgia’s biggest strength remains on defense after ranking ninth in the nation last season in points allowed (16.9)

North Carolina vs Georgia Free Pick

This should be a great matchup between two teams looking to make a run at winning their conference title this season. Both of these offenses should be able to move the ball down the field behind their running game, but I give the overall edge to Georgia behind a stout defense that knows how to keep opposing teams out of the end zone.

Even though this game will be played at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta as opposed to the Bulldogs’ home stadium in Athens, they will also have a slight advantage playing at this venue with the majority of the crowd firmly on their side. Lay the 2.5 points in this one and take Georgia to win both SU and ATS.
