Memphis Tigers at Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks Overview

Memphis Tigers

Memphis comes into this match with a shiny ranking next to its name placed as high as No. 23 in some polls. Most recently, the Tigers defeated the Navy Midshipmen on a primetime match, last Thursday where they defeated the Mids 35-23 and covered for their second straight outing as 10-point chalk.

Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

The Hawks come into this game on the heels of their second straight ATS loss but managed to end a two-game losing streak when the Hawks defeated the South Alabama Jaguars, last Saturday by a score of 30-17. Unfortunately for UL Monroe backers, the Warhawks could not get over the number and closed as a 14.5-point favorite.

Reasons To Avoid Memphis Tigers

There is enormous hype surrounding this Memphis football team as it was one of few teams to be favored to win every game it participated in this season when pre-season prognostications were completed. By this narrative, their undefeated record, and their ranking, this is a team that is certainly prone to an overlay in this spot given their opponent. After all, we have seen 81% of the consensus get on board with the Music City Tigers. The line has jumped by a full three points already, which extracted any value left on UM.

Reasons To Back Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks

The Memphis Tigers have the best passing defense in America. However, Monroe is a running team. Led by dual-threat quarterback Caleb Evans, the Hawks have a savory match-up against Memphis’ 77th-ranked rushing defense which surrenders 160 yards per outing. UL Monroe compiles 216.2 yards per game on the ground (30th in the FBS) and the situation presented makes a play on them warranted. Monroe can play the ball control game and frustrate this Tigers team who undoubtedly love to unleash their high-powered offense. By limiting Memphis possessions and playing keep away, the Warhawks can keep this game closer than Memphis hopes and come in under the number. Moreover, the high Over/Under would also suggest that this game will become a shoot-out. In such a scenario, working with two touchdowns plus a near-additional field goal is an academic move in an offensive-oriented affair.

Memphis at Louisiana-Monroe Prediction 10/5/19
Lest we also forget that Caleb Evans and several other upperclassmen recollect their dance with Memphis two years ago where the Warhawks played the Tigers tough in Memphis. UL Monroe will not be intimidated by this Memphis team and if anything they are delighted that they get to host the re-match with local support behind them. For UL Monroe this could very well be a case of unfinished business, and I expect the Warhawks to throw the kitchen sink at the Tigers. With a steady dose of Evans and Running Back Josh Johnson, Monroe could easily lose this by a mere touchdown. To play it safe, I'd say that number can be as high as two touchdowns-plus conversions. Either way, the three-point line move away from Memphis will be a pivotal ingredient in what I believe will be a profitable venture in taking the points.
