Brewers-Giants MLB Betting Preview

Milwaukee just split two games up in Minnesota, winning Tuesday 6-3 but losing Wednesday 4-1 on a Twins three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth. Just before that, the Brewers lost two of three games at home to Pittsburgh, and just before that, they lost two of three at home to the Cubs. Going back a bit further, Milwaukee is 0-2-2 over its last four series and 5-7 over its last 12 games. Nonetheless, at 49-40 overall, the Brewers still lead the NL Central by two games over second-place St. Louis. San Francisco, meanwhile, just took two of three games at home from Arizona, rallying late to win Wednesday'sWednesday's series rubber match 4-3. Just before that, the Giants split four games at San Diego, and just before that, they lost two of three at Arizona. Going back a bit further, San Francisco is only 1-4-2 over its last seven series and 7-15 over its last 22 games. At 45-42 overall, the Giants trail the first-place Dodgers by 12 games in the NL West but only sit one game back of the Cardinals in the battle for the No. 3 spot in the NL wild-card standings. This series is the second meeting between these teams this season; back in April, they squeezed in a one-off game in Milwaukee, a 4-2 San Francisco victory.

Thursday's Pitching Match-Up

Lefty Rodon is 10/17 on quality starts this season and five for his last six. Last Saturday, he held the Padres to one run and three hits through a full nine innings, with two walks and 12 strikeouts, in a 3-1 Giants win. And over his last six starts, he's allowed just seven runs and 22 hits through 41 innings, with ten walks against 49 whiffs. San Francisco is only 8-9 with Rodon this season, but that might be as much as five games worse than they should be, based on his performances. In his most recent outing against the Brewers, while with the White Sox last season, Rodon allowed two runs and four hits through four frames of a 6-1 ChiSox defeat. Burnes is a super solid 13/17 on quality starts this year, working on a run of five in a row. Last Wednesday, he held the Cubs scoreless on three hits through seven innings, with one walk against ten strikeouts, although the Brewers lost that game 2-1. And over his last five starts, he's allowed just six runs and 16 hits through 33 2/3 innings, with nine walks against 42 whiffs. Milwaukee is 10-7 with Burnes this season, but that's probably three games worse than they should be. Over three career starts against San Francisco, two last year, and that game back in April of this season, Burnes allowed two runs and ten hits through 19 2/3 innings, with three walks and 25 K'sK's. The Brewers won two of those three games, and all three games played under their totals.

Splits With the Sticks

Milwaukee is batting .223 against left-handed pitching this season, with a .310 team OBP and a .370 team slugging percentage. The Brewers have also been held to three runs or less five times over their last nine games. San Francisco is slashing .234/.319/.388 against right-handed pitching. The Giants are also running seriously hot and cold, scoring 12 and 13 runs recently but also three or less six times over their last ten games.

The Bullpens

The San Francisco bullpen owns a 4.20 ERA this season, along with a 1.37 WHIP. The Milwaukee pen owns a 3.60 ERA and a 1.22 WHIP. But closer Hader is struggling lately, giving up six runs over his last five appearances, covering four innings.

Totals Report

The Over is 43-39 in Brewers games this season.

The Over is also 43-39 in Giants games.

The Over is 22-18 at Oracle Park this season.

The Under is a combined 17-13 with Rodon and Burnes this season.

We give Burnes a slight edge in the pitching match-up, but both these guys have been just great lately. However, Rodon threw 112 pitches his last time out; his previous high this season was 110; in his next outing, he got bombed for eight runs in less than four innings. From there, we give San Francisco an edge with the sticks, but Milwaukee owns the edge in bullpen comparison.
It's not often you can get Burnes at such a low price; we're betting the Brewers Thursday night.
