Red Sox-Yankees MLB Betting Preview

New York took the opener of this series Friday night 6-5 in 11 innings, then won Saturday's game 4-2. The Yankees won Friday as -170 favorites on the baseball betting dime line, then at -150 Saturday.

Also, Friday's game played over a total of eight runs, although it needed extra innings to do it. Then Saturday's game played under a total of nine.

Both these teams won 92 games last season before Boston beat New York in a one-game playoff to decide an AL wild-card berth. But while the Red Sox played over its 2021 Season wins over/under of 80.5, the Yankees played under their O/U of 95.5.

This year Boston is playing against a "season wins" over/under of 85.5, New York 91.5.

Last year the Red Sox took the season series from the Yanks 10 games to nine.

Sunday's Pitching Match-Up

Lefty Montgomery hit just 6/30 on quality starts last season, although some of that had to do with a short leash. Nine times last year, he pitched to within three outs or less of a QS, only to get pulled. On the whole last year, Montgomery posted a 3.83 ERA and a 1.28 WHIP through 157 1/3 innings, with 162 strikeouts against 51 walks.

New York played 17-13 with Montgomery last season.

Over five starts last year against Boston, Montgomery allowed ten runs and 26 hits through 27 1/3 innings, with 25 K's against seven walks. The Yankees lost three of those five games while four of those games played under their totals.

Houck, meanwhile, "hit" 0/13 on quality starts this year, also in part due to a short leash. Only one-time last year did he pitch into the sixth inning. On the whole last year, Houck put up a 3.52 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP through 69 innings, with 87 whiffs against 21 walks.

Boston played 8-5 when Houck started last season.

Over two starts against the Yankees last year, Houck allowed two earned runs and seven hits through 8 2/3 innings, with ten strikeouts against two walks. The Sox split those two games.

Splits With the Sticks

Boston batted .264 against left-handed pitching last season, with a .329 team OBP and a .429 team slugging percentage. Also, so far this season, the Red Sox are just 2/22 with runners in scoring position.

New York slashed .230/.316/.400 against right-handed pitching last year.

The Bullpens

The Boston bullpen posted a 3.99 ERA last season, along with a 1.39 WHIP.

The Yankees pen put up a 3.56 ERA last year with a 1.21 WHIP.

Red Sox at Yankees ML Prediction 4/10/22
We're calling this pitching match-up a push while we'll give New York slight edges with the sticks and in the bullpen comparison. However, after going 2/22 with RISP through the first two games of this series, we expect a little better luck from Boston Sunday night. Also, the Red Sox won't want to get swept by their hated rivals in the first series of the season. Betting baseball often comes down to finding value on the betting lines, and we like the value here with Boston getting the underdog price.
