Diamondbacks-Braves Betting Preview
Arizona took the opener of this series Tuesday night by the football-like score of 16-13. The Diamondbacks led that game 2-0 early, trailed 5-2, led 8-5, trailed 11-8, led 12-11, trailed 13-12, then won it with a run in the eight and three in the ninth. Arizona won Tuesday as a +160 underdog against Bryce Elder while the game played over a total of 10 runs in the top of the second inning! Tuesday’s win snapped a four-game losing skid for the Diamondbacks, and going back a but further they’re only 3-8 their last 11 times out. But at 53-42 overall Arizona owns fourth place in the National League playoff standings. Atlanta, meanwhile, now owns a three-game losing skid. But at 61-32 overall the Braves still lead the Dodgers by 6.5 games in the battle for the best record in the National League. These two teams have now split four meetings this season.
Wednesday's Pitching Match-Up
Morton is one out away from three quality starts in a row. Last Friday he held the White Sox scoreless on three hits through seven innings, only needing 83 pitches to get 21 outs, in a 9-0 Atlanta victory. And over his last three starts he’s allowed just one run and 11 hits through 19 innings, with four walks against 15 strikeouts. The Braves are 11-7 with Morton this season, 5-0 his last five times out. Over his last two starts against Arizona, one last year and one earlier this season, Morton allowed seven runs and 10 hits through 12 innings. Atlanta lost both those games. Nelson is 0/2 on quality starts his last two times out. Last Friday he managed to hold Toronto to two runs - one earned - on nine hits through 5 2/3 innings of a 7-2 Diamondbacks loss. But just before that the Mets got him for seven runs and two home runs through just three innings of another Arizona defeat. The D’Backs are 8-11 with Nelson this season, 2-4 his last six times out. In his only previous career start against Atlanta, back in June of this season, Nelson allowed three runs and six hits through 4 2/3 innings of a 5-2 Diamondbacks defeat.

Diamondbacks at Braves Free Pick 7/19/23
Atlanta gets our handicapping check-marks in the pitching match-up, the splits with the sticks and in the bullpen comparison. So obviously we like the Braves. But we don’t like that price. So in noting that nine of Atlanta’s 11 wins with Morton this season came by at least two runs we’ll take a chance and play the Braves against the run line.
